“35 Shots of Rum” film screening

35 Shots of Rum (“35 rhums”) (France, 2008) (100 min.) Screenplay: Claire Denis and Jean-Pol Far-geau. “Claire Denis’s sublime ‘35 Shots of Rum’ stands out all the more for its soothing quiet, conveying the easy, frequently nonverbal intimacy between a widowed father, Lionel (Alex Descas), and his diligent university-student daughter, Joséphine (Mati Diop). An homage to both Yasujiro Ozu’s similarly themed ‘Late Spring’ (1949) and her own mother’s relationship with her grandfather, ‘35 Shots’ is Denis’s warmest, most radiant work, honoring a family of two’s extreme closeness while suggesting its potential for suffocation.” –Melissa Anderson, The Village Voice Filmmaker Claire Denis will visit Emory University Nov. 14- 15, 2012, to screen her most recent feature, “White Material,” and discuss her creative process. An Evening with World-Renowned French Filmmaker Claire Denis

Emory Cinematheque- 35 mm Movie Magic: Special and Visual Effects from 1896 to Now White Material (Claire Denis; France, 2009)(2.35:1, 106 min.) Claire Denis, director of “Chocolat,” “Beau Travail,” “35 Cups of Rum,” will introduce and discuss her latest feature film White Material (2009). “Claire Denis’s strongest movie in the decade since ‘Beau Travail,’ her tense, convulsive ‘White Material’ is a portrait of change and a thing of terrible beauty. The time is unspecified. The subject is the collapse of an unnamed West African State, and the protagonist, Maria, a French settler unflinchingly played by Isabelle Huppert, is the proprietress of a family-run coffee plantation. Astonishingly self contained and remarkably girlish, Huppert anchors the movie. Maria is impossibly stubborn, apparently tireless, and totally fearless. The film is impressionistic yet tactile—Denis presents an unclear situation with gorgeous immediacy. It’s as if working with new DP Yves Cape, she has rediscovered film as… University Event Topic: Arts. Department/Organization: Film Studies. Director: John Landis.
